Shipping for Online Sellers in Indonesia: JNE, J&T, SiCepat, and What Actually Works

Most new online sellers guess shipping costs and lose money. Here is how the logistics actually work in Indonesia and how to stop subsidizing your customers' shipping.

Shipping for Online Sellers in Indonesia: JNE, J&T, SiCepat, and What Actually Works

You just got your first online order. The notification comes in and for about three seconds you are thrilled. Then it hits you. You have no idea how to ship this thing. Welcome to the part of e-commerce nobody talks about.

The players in Indonesian logistics are not complicated but picking the wrong one for your situation will cost you. JNE has the widest coverage in the country and is the most reliable for remote areas. Their tracking is decent and delivery times are consistent. Downside: they are slightly more expensive than competitors. J&T is fast, has excellent real-time tracking, and competitive rates for Java and Sumatra. SiCepat is the budget option. Their rates are hard to beat within Java but service quality drops outside major cities. Anteraja is the newcomer with aggressive pricing, especially for marketplace sellers. Pos Indonesia is the cheapest for truly remote locations but also the slowest. Each has strengths. None is universally best. The courier that works for your friend in Bandung might be terrible for your customers in Kalimantan.

The biggest mistake new sellers make is offering free shipping on everything. You are not Shopee. You do not have their logistics volume discounts. You do not have their negotiated rates. "Gratis ongkir" for every order will eat your margin alive. Here is when to offer it: orders above a minimum threshold, like free shipping over Rp 200K. Or as a limited promo, not a permanent default. Your shipping cost is real money leaving your pocket. Treat it that way.

Weight matters more than you think. Under 1kg is the sweet spot. Most courier rates jump significantly above 1kg. A product that weighs 800 grams costs way less to ship than one that weighs 1.1kg. Weigh your products with packaging included. That 200 gram t-shirt in a 150 gram poly mailer is 350 grams of shipping weight. That glass jar of sambal at 450 grams in a 300 gram box with bubble wrap is 750 grams. Get a digital kitchen scale. They cost around Rp 50,000 on any online marketplace. Best investment you will make this month. Stop guessing your shipping weight. Your wallet will notice the difference.

Packaging deserves more thought than most sellers give it. Bubble wrap for anything fragile. Poly mailer for clothes and soft goods. A rigid box for anything that should not bend. The rule is simple but people get it wrong in both directions. Do not overpack. Every extra layer of cardboard adds weight and every gram costs you money at the courier counter. Do not underpack either. A damaged product means a refund request and a customer who never comes back. The sweet spot: just enough padding that the product does not move inside the box when you shake it gently. If it rattles, add more padding. If the box weighs more than the product, take some out.

Tracking numbers are not optional. They are the bare minimum of customer service in 2026. Send the tracking number to your customer immediately after you drop off the package. Most courier apps let you copy the number with one tap and paste it into WhatsApp. The five seconds you spend doing this saves you five WhatsApp messages later asking "Udah dikirim belum?" Your customer feels taken care of. You spend less time answering status questions. Everyone wins.

Returns happen. Have a policy before you need one. Who pays return shipping? What condition must the product be in for a return? How many days does the customer have to request it? Write this down and put it somewhere visible on your store page. You will need it eventually. Making it up on the spot when an angry customer is messaging you is the worst way to create a return policy.

For orders over Rp 500,000, consider shipping insurance. JNE offers insurance at 0.2% of the declared value. On a Rp 1,000,000 order, that is Rp 2,000. If the package gets lost or damaged, you get your money back instead of eating a million rupiah loss. That math is not complicated. Insurance is boring until you need it. Then it is the smartest Rp 2,000 you ever spent.

halaman toko online dengan pengiriman otomatis — OperoStore calculates shipping costs based on weight and courier rates so your customers see accurate ongkir at checkout. No more manual rate checking. No more subsidizing shipping because you guessed wrong. Flat Rp 100,000 per month. Free trial included.

Learn from your first twenty shipments. Which courier had the fewest complaints? Which destination city took the longest? Which packaging method resulted in zero damage? That data is worth more than any guide. Your shipping workflow will improve fast once you start paying attention to what actually happens after the package leaves your hands. Most sellers never track this. You are already ahead just by reading this far.
